Decision-making about coming to school should begin in the home with families. When a student is feeling unwell and exhibiting any of the COVID-19 symptoms (cough shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, or new loss of taste or smell), that student should refrain from coming to school and follow the protocols for reporting an absence in the Hopkinton Public Schools. Mitigating the spread of the virus will only happen if all families adhere to this important protocol. We understand that families are concerned about recorded absences and loss of credit. COVID-19 absences--whether for isolation or quarantine--will be excused. The School Committee policy regarded attendance is under review for revision at this time.
Students who arrive from out-of-state must follow Massachusetts and local Department of Public Health protocols around quarantining before returning to school.
In accordance with DESE’s requirements for suspected cases of COVID-19, each school will have what is known as a “COVID-19 Room” or “Isolation Room.” This space will be used to house students or adults who, during the day, present with symptoms of COVID-19. The School Nurse, with appropriate PPE, will monitor the person until that person is appropriately dismissed from the school environment. Immediately afterward, the COVID-19 Room will be disinfected fully by the custodial staff.
