    Building Curriculum Accommodation Plan (BCAP)


    The purpose of the Building Curriculum Accommodation Plan (BCAP) is to describe the strategies and resources available to classroom teachers and specialists in their quest to address the diverse learning needs of students.


    As stated by the MA DOE, the targeted areas for the DCAP are:

    1. Strategies to assist regular education classroom teachers to help them analyze and accommodate various students’ learning needs, including students who are English Language Learners, and to manage students’ behavior effectively
    2. Support services that are available to students through the regular education program
    3. Direct and systematic instruction
    4. Teacher mentoring and collaboration
    5. Parental involvement in their children’s education

    * Math Tutor and Literacy Specialists at Elmwood with demonstration lessons, direct instruction, resources, technologies, and coaching

    * Consultation, collaboration, and direct support with the Learning Support Team (LST) with resources, data review, and development of student learning goals, along with progress monitoring

    * Integrated Technology Coordinator (half-time) with demonstration lessons, resources and curriculum based technologies

    * Consultation with School Guidance Counselor, School Psychologist, Behavior Specialist (BCBA), School Nurse, English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher, Librarian, Music/Gym/Art Educators, Elementary Curriculum Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Principal

    * Fall, Winter, and Spring ELA and Math Benchmark Assessments

    * Professional Development (PD): SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Curriculum Coordinator, Sep, Nov., and March PD Days, Building-Based Meetings, Faculty Meetings, and Early Release Days, TEC and ACCEPT Workshops, Summer Courses

    * Common Planning Meetings (on ER days, BBM and faculty time), with Grade Level Colleagues and monthly team planning for Grade 3 teachers

    *Weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) time built into master schedule

    *Weekly Response to Intervention (RTI) blocks at a minimum of 2 times per week this year.

    * Fall, Winter, and Spring administration and analysis of literacy assessments to plan explicit, systematic instruction

    * Explicit instruction in 5 domains of literacy:

         1. Phonemic Awareness (K-1)

         2. Phonics/Structural analysis (Cunningham, Fountas & Pinnell)

    3.     Vocabulary

    4.     Comprehension

    5.     Fluency (repeated readings, independent reading)

    * Guided Reading approach for explicit instruction using leveled readers that match student reading levels

    * Focused instruction on strategies for reading non-fiction

    * Systematic classroom collection and classification of books ranging in reading levels and interests for in-class libraries

    *Online resources for home and school use, including Reading A-Z and Lexia

    Direct and Systematic Mathematics Instruction

    * Fall, Winter, and Spring administration and analysis of mathematical assessments to plan explicit, systematic

    * Daily, focused, explicit instruction in mathematics that include:

    * Variety of manipulatives, problem solving, collaborative learning, visuals and web-based activities

    *Online resources for home and school use, including the FasttMath Program

    Teacher Mentoring and Collaboration

    *Common grade level planning time

    *First year Mentoring Program (includes a Mentor Handbook, Teacher Mentor, new teacher monthly meetings, professional development, mentor meetings)

    The following information is provided to comply with the Massachusetts General Laws Ch. 71 Section 38Q ½ mandating that school districts provide a District Curriculum Accommodation Plan designed to assist Principals in ensuring that all efforts have been made to meet students’ needs in regular education and avoid unnecessary referrals to special education. In addition, Section 59C of Ch.71 mandates that each School Council meets with the Principal “for the development, implementation and assessment of the curriculum accommodation plan” to be individualized for each school.
