School MEals q&a

Returning to School: Meal Update

Free meals are available to all students until 12/31 due to a grant from the USDA. No documentation/application is needed to receive these benefits. After 12/31, meals will NOT be free for everyone and student eligibility will dictate meal pricing. Free/Reduced meal applications are below and may be submitted at any time.

Recent Q&A's

Q1: Should I take free meals even though my student doesn't want one?
A: No, please do not take meals if they are not needed and/or will be wasted. We have countless families struggling financially due to COVID and the ability to offer free meals helps us support those in need and those who may need assistance but are not comfortable asking for it. With that being said, if your student wants to try school lunch or normally buys lunch but pays full price, by all means please join us!  We just don't want to waste food and money for no reason.

Q2: My student is 100% remote and will need school meals, how do I access these?
A: Pre-order meals weekly by 7pm Wednesday, link on "daily bulletin" on PowerSchool. Meals for 100% remote learners are prepared by the HPS food service department and made available at Project Just Because (PJB), 109 South St. Mon-Thurs. 9:30a-3:30p

Q3: Do I need to pre-order meals for my student who is onsite?
A: NO, pre-orders are only required for remote meals

Q4: My hybrid student will need a meal while they are remote learning, how do I go about this?
A: Complete the Pre-Order form by 7pm Wednesday located on the "daily bulletin" in PowerSchool. Remind student to pick up bagged meal at dismissal.

Q5: I'm still confused, who can I contact?
A: Please email the HPS Food Service Department at mbabin@hopkinton.k12.ma.us. Do NOT contact PJB unless you need to schedule a contactless delivery

Lunch Heroes

Families have asked how they might help.  We have opened a financial donation center for the public schools.  Please visit MySchoolBucks to make donations to the Lunch Heroes.  This new program has been initiated to help students and families that struggle to purchase a nutritious school lunch.  The Lunch Heroes program is a way for individuals to make donations to support students when they no longer have the funds to do so.  Please login to your MySchoolBucks account and select School Store from the top right or use the express button below.

The Hopkinton Public Schools Food Service Department takes pride in preparing and serving nutritious meals to our students. We believe that students learn better when they’re not hungry. As such, the following meal and collection guidelines have been developed for Paid and Reduced-price students in order for the lunch program to continue operating in a fiscally responsible manner:

  • Once a student account has reached a negative balance an email is sent weekly notifying parents of their negative balance.  A list of students with negative balances will also be provided to the principal’s office weekly.
  • Students will NOT be allowed to charge desserts, snacks, milk or any other a la carte items if they have a negative balance that exceeds these guidelines.
  • The food service manager will contact the parent or guardian once the balance reaches a negative $10.  The Food Service Director will contact the parent or guardian once the balance reaches a negative $50.

Parents or guardians are encouraged to apply for a Free and Reduced Lunch under the federal government’s guidelines. Applications are available on the District’s website.

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Please contact the Food Service Department @508-417-9394 if you have any questions about these guidelines.
