STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The Hopkinton School Committee is dedicated to providing a healthy, comfortable, and productive environment for staff, students, and citizens. The School Committee believes that education plays a critical role in establishing life-long health habits for its students. A comprehensive health curriculum K-12 emphasizing the dangers of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol remain major goals for the school district. The Hopkinton School Committee also has a strong interest in the health of its employees and in their serving as positive role models for students.
Use of any tobacco products within the school buildings, school facilities, or on school grounds or school buses by any individual, including school personnel and students, is prohibited at all times. In addition, tobacco use by students is banned at all school sponsored events, even though this use does not take place on school grounds.
A student determined to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action pursuant to the student discipline code, as stated in the Student Handbook.
A staff member determined to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action as stated in the Employee Handbook.
A citizen who is observed smoking or using tobacco products on school property will be asked to refrain from smoking and the use of tobacco products while on school property and he/she/they will be reminded that we are required by law to keep school premises tobacco free. If the individual fails to comply with the request, it may be deemed necessary to call upon the local law enforcement agency to enforce this policy.
This policy and disciplinary procedures shall be promulgated to all staff and students in appropriate handbook(s) and publications.
Signs shall be posted in all school buildings informing the general public of the District policy and requirements of state law.
