Teachers may be required to write an entirely new or substantially changed curriculum, such as when a new high school elective is being developed. Per the Hopkinton Public Schools Teachers’ Contract, curriculum writing outside of contractual hours is compensated at the rate of $25/hour. A teacher must have prior permission from his/her principal and coordinator or director before beginning this work. The teacher should complete the Curriculum Project Proposal form and have his/her principal sign it. The form is then submitted to the curriculum director for final approval.
The following guidelines will be followed regarding compensation for large projects:
Courses will be approved and compensated based on the following, with “school year” defined as the first day of school through the following August 15th to allow for summer curriculum writing
Up to forty (40) total hours within one school year for writing the curriculum for a new one-semester course.
Up to eighty (80) total hours within one school year for writing the curriculum for a new two-semester course.
Up to twenty (20) total hours within one school year for substantial revisions to an existing one-semester course.
Up to forty (40) total hours within one school year for substantial revisions to an existing two-semester course. (Note: AP Courses have an existing syllabus / associated curriculum and are two semesters in length)
Compensation will be approved after the teacher provides evidence to his/her principal or director in the Atlas curriculum data base of successful completion of the course curriculum, including all three Understanding by Design stages with the appropriate materials attached.
For the purposes of these guidelines, courses written and/or revised by multiple authors receive a proportional share of the compensation described above. For example, if four teachers work equally to author a new one-semester course, each shall be compensated for no more than ten hours.
Teachers may take courses that are offered by the Hopkinton Public Schools for in-service credit and may apply earned in-service credits toward contractual lane changes. Course credit is computed at the rate of(1) credit for every fifteen (15) hours of course work. Courses offered internally will carry a maximum of three (3) credits.
The following guidelines will be followed:
Teachers will request in-service credit approval by submitting the Hopkinton Public Schools Course Approval form to the Assistant Superintendent prior to the start of the course.
Teachers will not be charged for these courses.
The course instructor will submit a Hopkinton Public Schools Certificate of Successful In-Service Course Completion to each teacher in the course and to the Assistant Superintendent.
Application of in-service credit to lane changes will follow the same timelines as in the Hopkinton Public Schools Teachers’ Contract for college or university courses.
