browser

Definition:
A browser is a software program that lets you explore the World Wide Web to find text, graphics, sound, movies, games, chats and more.
Explanation:
A browser helps you link to pages on websites around the world. To find a website, type in a URL (web address) or click a link or a button in the toolbar.
Sentence:
"What is your favorite browser, Netscape or Explorer?"
cursor
Definition:
A blinking line or shape on the screen that tells you where the next character will go.
Explanation:
In the example above, the I-beam is used to put the cursor in place. The definition of cursor is changing; I-beams and other pointers are often called cursors.
Sentence:
"Put the cursor before the letter N."


download

Definition:
To download a file is to get it from someone else's computer, over a network, and save it on your own computer or floppy disk.
Explanation:
Download means "receive." You can download many kinds of files from the Internet, including images and software.
Sentence:
"Let's download the image of Lincoln."
hard copy Definition:

Printed output.

Explanation:

A hard copy is a printed out copy of information, whereas a soft copy refers to data displayed on a video screen.

Sentence:

Please keep the hard copy in your folder on the desk.
 
 

HTML
 
Definition:

HTML, known as "the language of the Web," is the set of codes used to make Web pages.

Explanation:

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is the coded instructions that tell a browser how and where to place information, graphics and links on a web page.

Sentence:

"I changed the HTML to put a link to NASA at the top of my web page."


 

icon

Definition:
An icon is a tiny picture on the screen that represents a program, file or folder.
Explanation:
Icons make it easy to find what you are looking for. To tell the computer to open a file, folder or program, double-click on the icon. To select an item, click only once on the icon.
Sentence:
"Double-click on the KidPix icon to launch the program."
Internet Definition:

The Internet is millions of computers around the world connected to each other.

Explanation:

When you're on the Internet, your computer is connected to others by networks of telephone wire, cable and satellite. The Web, e-mail, chat, and newsgroups are things you can do on the Internet.

Sentence:

"Is this computer on the Internet?"

taskbar Definition:

The Windows 95/98 Taskbar is a row of buttons across the bottom of the screen.

Explanation:

When an application is minimized (the _ button), it turns into a button on the Taskbar. When the button is clicked, it is restored to its previous position on screen.

The Taskbar can be moved to the top, right or left side of the screen by clicking any free space on the bar and dragging it there.

The Taskbar can also be hidden and made to appear when the cursor is moved to the edge of the screen. To hide the Taskbar, right click on any free space on the bar and select AUTO HIDE from the TASKBAR OPTIONS Properties sheet

Sentence:

Use the taskbar to move from one application to another.
 
 

toolbar Definition:

A row or column of on-screen buttons used to activate functions in the application.

Explanation:

Some toolbars are customizable, letting you add and delete buttons as required.
 

Most toolbar buttons show only pictures, while some have a text explanation too.

Sentence:

To create a table, click on the toolbar icon.
 
 

URL Definition:

A URL is the address of a website on the World Wide Web.

Explanation:

To visit a website, you type the URL into a browser. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. Other

Internet resources have URL's, too, but if the URL starts with "www." then you know it's on the Web.

Sentence:

"The URL for the NASA website is www.nasa.gov."
