Celebrating Success

National Merit Scholarship Program
Hopkinton High School is pleased to announce the following seniors who have been named a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  They are:  Andrew Bayiates, Jay Branscomb, Shaye Ellis, Jonathan Ho, Mary Kelly, Meghan Krueger, Kayla Lewkowicz, Anna Lipkin, Devin McAvoy, Lauren O’Loughlin, Amy Sung, and Michelle Surka.  These students are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry.  Congratulations  on this outstanding achievement.
 
We are also pleased to announce that Thiago Mendes has been recognized for 2009-10 year in the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP).  He is awarded for excellence in academic achievement.  Congratulations!
 
AP Scholars Awards

Eighty three students at Hopkinton High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams.
 
Twenty six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  These students are Andrew Choi, Thomas Coburn, Brittany Collins, Matthew Cosmo, Eric Docknevich, Benjamin English, Andrew Fabricant, Alice Folkebrant, Elizabeth Gamache, Rachel Gately, Danielle Gendron, Patrick Jarvis, Lindsay Kramer, Andrew Litavis, Keith Love, Chelsey Lyman, Stephen Lynch, Patrick Maruska, Vladimir Parfenov, Deanna Payson, Jaclyn Perreault, Brianna Roche, Lauren Schultz, Kevin Sellers, Henry Spang, and Suzanne Whalen.
 
Seventeen students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.  These students are Laura Babcock, Alice Beecher, Gretchen Claffey, Sean Donahue, Daniel Donohue, Caitlin Dourney, Lauren Dunne, Connor Fitzpatrick, Camille Kulig, Anna Lipkin, Perri Meldon, Shannon Murphy, Courtney Onofrio, Kellie Rattigan, Cian Rice, Michael Richardson, and Kimbra Wagner.

International Science Fair
John Hinkel received a 3rd award as well as two special awards (one from the American Intellectual Property Law Association and one from the Patent and Trademark Office Society) at the Intel International Science Fair in Reno, Nevada.

State Science Fair
The State Science Fair was held at MIT with over 300 projects entered from over 35 schools across the state. Nine out of 10 entries from Hopkinton received awards: First awards

Poetry Showcase
The following students shared their works of art at the ESL Theater on Sunday, May 10. As some of the best writers in this year’s creative writing classes, these students were invited by their creative writing teachers to read their poetry and participate in the first annual HHS Poetry Showcase. The students’ poetry made their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and teachers laugh, cry, and experience all the human emotions. Art All State
Every year, Massachusetts Art All State brings together 140 high school juniors of exceptional artistic potential and commitment to work with their peers and with practicing artists for two full days at the Worcester Art Museum. Each high school in the state may nominate two junior students to attend. Nominated students submit slides of their artwork, and appear before a panel of art educators for an interview. We are very pleased to announce that both of our student nominees have been accepted to this year’s Art All State. Congratulations to Samantha Oleson and Mady McKenna, who will represent Hopkinton High School at Art All State 2009 in May.

High School Concert Band
The High School Concert Band won a Gold Medal at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association (MICCA) Concert and Choral Festival. As a Gold Medalist in the MICCA Festival, the High School Concert Band will be performing in the MICCA Stars at Symphony showcase event at Symphony Hall in Boston on Saturday, April 25th.

National Merit Finalists
Congratulations to Lauren Shultz and Keith Love who were named Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. This places Keith and Lauren in the top 15,000 (1%) of students in the country. This is the first time since 2003 that HHS has two Finalists.

Model UN Club
Model UN Club won the Best Small Delegation award for a second year in a row at the Model UN Conference. Some team members also received individual awards, team members were: Connor Fitzpatrick, Liz Gamache - Best Delegate, Pat Maruska - Outstanding Delegate award, Jaclyn Perreault, Derek Bressler - Honorable Mention, Molly Karg - Outstanding Delegate, Elise Lecrone - Outstanding Delegate, Meghan Smart
Brittany O'Loughlin, Dan Genkin - Honorable Mention, Catie Maruska.

Cheerleading
Congratulations to the Varsity Cheerleaders for their performance at the Division 3 State Championship. The performance placed them 5th in the state (a school placement record) as well as qualified them to attend the Cheerleading Nationals.

Regional Science Fair Results
For the first time, Hopkinton took both first awards at the Regional Science Fair! These students will now receive an all-expense paid trip to the International Fair in Reno Nevada where they will compete (and meet) 1500 students from 55 countries around the world. These students are: Courtney Onofrio: The Effect of Turmeric in Parkinson's Drosopholia, John Hinkel: Head-controlled Mouse Interface.

Additionally, HHS had the second highest scoring team project at the fair. These students will compete against one team from each of the other regional fairs for the chance to be the Massachusetts TEAM delegate to ISEF. These students are: Patrick Jarvis and Thomas Coburn: Optimal Nutrient Levels on the Bioremediation of Oil: Part 2.

Hopkinton received the second highest total of awards with 8 projects receiving recognition. All students will be competing at the State Fair at MIT in early May. The other 8 projects receiving awards were: 2nd awards: Gretchen Sileo and Amy Sung: Production of Poly-B-Hydroxybutyric Acid in Carbon Sources (7th highest score overall); 3rd awards: Ryan Foisy and Mitchell Culler: The Effects of Cell Phone Emissions on Drosophila (15th overall), Meghan Krueger and Colleen Murray: Effect of Vitamin E and Flaxseed Oil on ALS in C.elegans (16th overall), Alex Brown and Kate Richardson: Using Differential Agars to Identify Environmental Pathogens (20th overall); 4th awards: Andrew Ryan and Daniel Cunningham: The Effect of Tubercles on Wind Turbines

All are invited to view this exhibit of the best student artwork from high schools across the state.

Music Awards
The music department is pleased to announce that seniors Brian Carter and Laura Crook Brisson will be representing Hopkinton High School at this year’s Massachusetts Music Educators All-State Conference. Brian and Laura were selected by audition from over 2000 students across the state to perform with the All-State Band. The rehearsals will be held in March at the Convention Center in Boston and the All-State groups will perform at Symphony Hall in Boston.

Congratulations To Mallory Bannon for being selected the Boston Globe Division 2 Field Hockey player of the year!

Music Awards
Congratulations to the following students for being selected by audition to perform with the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Central District Music Festival Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. Dylan Bushe, Emily Crain, Brittany Wach and Kelly Wasilauski will be performing with the Central District Festival Chorus. Performing with the District Band are Ryan Webster on trumpet, Aaron Green and Abby Levy both on French Horn. Representing Hopkinton in the District Orchestra are Casey Patterson on viola, Laura Crook Brisson on French Horn and Brian Carter on tuba. Dylan Bushe, Brittany Wach, Kelly Wasilauski, Laura Crook Brisson and Brian Carter have also qualified to audition at the All-State level.

Math Team
The Math Team competed at Auburn High School on December 3rd and came in first place in their division beating 7 other schools—Quaboag, Holliston, Tahanto, Auburn, North, Blackstone, and Leicester. Fifteen mathletes competed. The top scorer was Vlad Parfenvov. Others competing were Casey Patterson, Gretchen Sileo, Rachel Gately, Danielle Gendron, Ryan Ashley, Lindsay Kramer, Matt Szczepankiewicz, Ruby Chiang, Ben English, Swati Sharma, Keith Love, Rebecca Albanese, Daniel Lukason, and Maggie Olney.

DAR Good Citizen Award
The winner of the DAR Good Citizen Award from the senior class is Camille Kulig

Jaclyn Perreault named 2008 Outstanding Writer
Jaclyn Perreaultwas recognized by the National Council of the Teachers of English as a 2008 Outstanding Writer. She was one of 15 students recognized statewide, and one of only 525 nationally.

National Merit Semifinalists
Lauren Shultz and Keith Love have been named Semifinalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. This was based on their performance on last year’s PSAT, where they placed in the top 1% of the 1.5 million students who took the test.t Scholarship Program.
