Longest River: Amazon River

The Amazon is the second longest river in the world. It flows about 4,000 miles. South America has a lot of rivers. Lots of people and animals live close to the many rivers.

Highest Mountain: Aconcagua

Aconcagua is 22,831 feet high. It is in the Andes Mountains. The Andes Mountains make up the world's longest mountain range.

Largest Lake: Lake Maracaibo

Lake Maracaibo is in Venezuela. There are not a lot of large lakes in South America. A famous lake though is Lake Titicaca. It is the highest lake in the world, 12,000 feet high in the Andes.

Surrounding Oceans: Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean

Most of South America is in the tropics. However, South America is long, and almost reaches to Antarctica. While a lot of South America is known for it's warm, green forests, there are also cold, empty deserts in south America.
