Building Accommodation Plan
- Elmwood’s Building Accommodation Plan was reviewed and updated. The Council agreed unanimously to accept the Plan.
- The updated Plan will be put onto Elmwood’s website for reference by teachers, parents, and community members.
Dr. Ilda King – Reading Consultant
- Heather Crowley updated Council members on the triangle strategy taught by to learning Specialists by Dr. King to ensure that students do not proceed too quickly and miss learning valuable skills.
- Amy Hamwey shared her experience working with two students who made significant progress last year once their Ed Plans had been amended to include additional reading instructional time, and Dr. King’s strategies had been implemented.
- All general educators will have four, half day sessions, with Dr. King at Elmwood School this year.
- The School Council agreed to sponsor a workshop with Dr. King targeted for Elmwood’s parents on Monday, February 6.
- Dr. King will be presenting a workshop on Thursday, December 8 to Hopkins’ parents and other interested members of the community. Several Council parents and Mrs. Silver plan to attend to hear what is discussed and to help to structure a workshop at Elmwood in the winter.
Budget Update
- No final budget decisions have been by the Superintendent to date.
- Budget recommendations from administrators were extensive and some will need to be revised downward due to lack of funding.
- The Superintendent will be presenting his budget to the School Committee in late December.
Facilities Update
- The School Committee has instructed Dr. Landman to submit a proposal to the MSBA to renovate the Elmwood School. The report must be submitted to the School Committee in less than one week. Mrs. Silver will be helping Dr. Landman with some of the background and history that needs to be included.
- Reviewed with the School Council some of the areas that are in need of renovation and replacement such as the roof, windows, HVAC system, flooring, playground and bus loop—to name a few.
Math Tutor Task Force
- Background information pertaining to a previous School Improvement Goal—The Math Tutor Task Force, was provided to Council members. Members were asked if they thought that the Tutor Task Force had outlived its usefulness—now that there is a Math Tutor on staff.
- After much discussion, it was decided that Dave Ljungberg would meet with the founder and coordinator, Gail Welsh, to see if sufficient tutors can be obtained this year.
- Suggestions were made to send requests for tutors to a variety of groups that may not have members with students in the public school.
- Another idea was to hold a mini session during lunch for review of math facts.
- The Council hopes not to discontinue this program—knowing that it has helped students to become more proficient at learning their math facts, identifying coins, and telling time.
Other
- Mrs. Silver updated the Council on the progress of Wee Deliver thus far this year. In the first three sessions over 1000 pieces of mail have been delivered.
- Updated members of the Crisis Drill held on Monday, December 5—scenario and intruder in the building. Teachers and students did an excellent job locking down and remaining silent and hidden.
Suggestions
- Invite Cafeteria Director Sherry Toscano to the next School Council meeting to discuss improvements made in the quality and selections for school lunch.
- Get additional information about the chef who will work with the school district.
- Find out how the Hopkinton Public Schools’ cafeterias will be made allergen-free.
The meeting concluded at 4:15 PM.
The next meeting of Elmwood’s School Council is scheduled for Tuesday, January 3. at 2:15 in the Elmwood Conference Room.
Respectfully submitted by,
Ilene S. Silver
